Giving through the Foundation to SHRP and its programs

By: Regina Beleckas Kelly, Director of Development and Stewardship, Foundation of UMDNJ

The Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Counseling Professions in conjunction with the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences received a generous gift of $500,000 from the Genesis HealthCare Corporation to launch the new Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program at SHRP. The gift will support curriculum development and scholarships for the program, which will accept its first students in early 2012. Genesis HealthCare is one of the nation’s largest long-term care and rehabilitation therapy providers, operating more than 200 skilled nursing centers and assisted living communities in 13 eastern states.  As an expanding segment of the U.S. population reaches retirement age, the demand for skilled occupational therapy assistants will grow. This field of allied health promisesexcellent employment opportunities in nursing centers, assisted living communities and other service providers to the elderly. UMDNJ-SHRP and the Foundation of UMDNJ thank Genesis HealthCare for choosing SHRP as its partner in developing the OTA program, which will enable more students to enter this up-and-coming discipline in allied health.

As the end of the calendar year approaches, our congressional leaders have yet to pass new legislation to override the reversion to the old tax law.  Beginning on January 1st, changes to income tax rates, marriage penalty relief, itemized deductions and other areas could have a significant impact on middle class taxpayers.  The Foundation of UMDNJ has the resources and capability to share with you unique and creative ideas that will give you the opportunity to exchange tax dollars for something of value for your favorite charities and your family.

As one measure, please consider reducing your 2010 personal tax liability by including SHRP in your year end contribution planning.  By using the form below, contributions can be designated to any SHRP program or to the SHRP Scholarship fund.

Faculty and staff of SHRP also have the option this year of making their contributions via payroll deduction through the SHRP Annual Fund (see the form attached at the end of the Newsletter).  Through the SHRP Annual Fund, contributions can be designated for the Annual Fund or for the SHRP Scholarship program.  Please return your completed SHRP Annual Fund form to me at SHRP Room 136/Stanley Bergen Building/Newark Campus.

For more information about year-end contributions and tax planning, please contact  at either 908-731-6594 or rkelly@njhf.org.

My warmest wishes to you during this holiday season!
