Attention Students
 UMDNJ Student Senate

This past August, the student leaders from all eight UMDNJ schools came together in New Brunswick for the first full meeting of the UMDNJ Student Senate.  The Student Senate was put together over the past year to advocate key student issues at the level of central administration and to foster a sense of collaboration and unity on multiple levels within students across the university.

At its first meeting, the Senate passed Senate Resolution SA09-04 urging UMDNJ's Board of Trustees to approve construction of a gym facility on the Newark campus at its next meeting.  In the coming year, we hope to initiate direct dialog with the highest echelons of university administration including President, Provost and Board of Trustees on issues ranging from tuition to financial aid to student life (and everything else listed below).  We also hope to assist in the expansion of service projects statewide through multidisciplinary collaboration.  We urge you to join our cause.

A little background info -- the Senate consists of four committees: University Affairs, Academic Affairs, Legislative Affairs and Community Service.  Each committee has a number of subcommittees and initiatives, listed below.  All of them need your activism, service and leadership.

If you'd like to join an initiative or help lead it, please email the relevant committee chairs or email us.

Fire Watch - Stanley S. Bergen Bldg., Newark

(Click on the blue links for the revised procedures and training schedule.)

The Stanley S. Bergen building has been put on a "FIRE WATCH" until further notice. The fire watch has been activated while Physical Plant completes a series of upgrades to the Bergen Building fire alarm system.

PLEASE NOTE: The SSB Fire Emergency Evacuation Procedures have been revised. Until further notice, ALL OCCUPANTS (floors Basement through 15) will be required to evacuate during all fire alarms. A procedure for persons with disabilities has been established and is outlined in the attached factsheet.

During a fire watch, it is important that all occupants be vigilant about fire hazards. Anyone who suspects fire or smells smoke should report it immediately, from a safe location, to the Public Safety emergency telephone numbers, 2-4490 or 222. Do not try to activate the fire alarm pull stations where a sign has been posted indicating that they are not active.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact EOHSS at 2-4812.

Thank you!

Marta Figueroa
Assistant Director, Newark and Scotch Plains Campuses
