Graduate Programs in Clinical Nutrition
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of
New Jersey (UMDNJ) - School of Health Related
Professions (SHRP) supports the philosophy that
learning is lifelong; dietetics programs are
offered on the preprofessional, graduate and
doctoral levels. Individuals may also take academic
courses for continuing professional
education credit. Current and prospecitve
students may click
here for the projected course schedule.
The Department of Nutritional Sciences Vision for 2014 details the collaborative strengths and future path of the department.
In 1995, SHRP introduced the first Masters
level program in New Jersey designed exclusively
for Registered Dietitians (RDs).
The program provides a clinically challenging
rigorous graduate education in nutrition that
may be completed online. This program is unique
in regards to its distance education options
and for advanced level practice opportunities
in clinical, community, public health and management
settings.
In 2000, SHRP Department of Nutritional Sciences
in collaboration with the Department of Interdisciplinary
Studies initiated a 60-credit Ph.D. in Health
Sciences-Nutrition Track. The nutrition track
incorporates 15 or more credits in nutrition.
The program is web-based and serves to prepare
RDs for assuming leadership roles in research,
academic, and/or clinical settings.
In 2003, SHRP opened the first clinical
doctorate program (DCN) in nutrition. This
web-based program focuses on advanced clinical
practice assuring that RDs remain integral members
of the health care team in any practice setting.
This program requires completion of a clinical
doctorate residency and a research project.
In addition to the advanced level MS, DCN,
and Ph.D. degree options, SHRP has been a long
time leader in dietetic education. The Dietetic
Internship (DI) has been preparing dietetics
professionals for entry-level practice since
1973. In 1998, a Coordinated
Program (CP) for DTRs wishing to pursue
registration eligibility was added.
