Entry Level Curriculum:Year One
Physical Agents PTDR6320
This course is designed to introduce a variety of physical therapy
procedures and modalities that are used to manage patient problems
with skin connective tissue and pain. The students will be
taught to use the following physical agents: heat cold
light water and sound. A comprehensive review of the
concepts characteristics and terminology of electro physics
is provided. The electrical modalities that are commonly employed
in the physical therapy clinic for evaluation and treatment of various
physical dysfunctions are emphasized. The specific electrotherapeutic
applications that are demonstrated and practiced include: (a) pain
modulation; (b) edema reduction; (c) tissue repair and enhanced
vascularization; (d) muscle strengthening; (e) orthotic substitution
and special applications for individuals with CNS lesions; (f) investigation
of neuromuscular dysfunction with low voltage currents and electromyographic
/ nerve conduction velocity studies; (g) electromyographic biofeedback
to alter neuromuscular output and (h) introduction of topical medications
with direct current. (3 credits)
