Medical Screening for Physical Therapists PTDR7325
This seminar will help prepare the therapist to assume the role
of an independent practitioner working within a collaborative medical
model. Inherent in the responsibilities associated with this role
is the ability to recognize clinical manifestations that suggest
physician contact is warranted regarding a patients health
status. In addition this seminar will assist the therapist
in developing an accurate prognosis by promoting an understanding
the impact various medical conditions may have on the rehabilitation
process. The components of the medical screening process will be
covered through indepth lecture and laboratory experiences.
A proposed examination scheme designed to promote efficient and
effective collection of patient data will provide the structure
for our discussions. An overview of pharmacology and diagnostic
imaging will be presented with the emphasis on the potential impact
on the physical therapists delivery of patient care and clinical
decisionmaking. Patient cases will be presented to illustrate
important medical screening principles. Professional communication
with patients and physicians will also be a central theme throughout
the seminar. (3 credits)
