Motion Analysis Laboratory

The Motion Analysis Laboratory is designed to record and analyze human movement. The lab is equipped with a Noraxon Myosystem 1200 eight channel EMG system to record muscle activity‚ a Peak Motus 3–D movement analysis system with 6 cameras to record movement‚ and 2 Kistler multicomponent force plates to record forces. These three systems are integrated‚ allowing a comprehensive analysis of all aspects of movement.

Research conducted in this laboratory has included a study in which the motion and muscle activity of individuals with shoulder pathology was studied during the performance of an upper extremity therapeutic activity‚ and compared to subjects without shoulder pathology. Another series of studies has analyzed various aspects of the sit–to–stand transition. One study analyzed the kinematics of the sit–to–stand transition in 6 to 7–year–old children and young adults. A second study is incorporating an additional age group (9 to 10 year–olds) and will also look at the kinetics of the transition. Future research will examine this transition in children with cerebral palsy.
