Human Performance Laboratory
The Human Performance Lab is a unique addition to the physical therapy program. This type of laboratory is typically found only in exercise physiology programs. The lab contains a Quinton metabolic cart Quinton stress testing system with 12 lead ECG monitoring and a Quinton 24 hour holter monitor. The devices are compatible with each other which allows for greater flexibility in testing. The metabolic cart not only allows for physiologic stress testing but also is capable of pulmonary function tests and resting metabolic tests.
The lab is designed for exercise research dealing with the disabled population or those with a chronic illness. The room also houses aerobic and anaerobic exercise devices to allow for these populations to exercise in the lab. To date research in this lab has examined the aerobic and functional improvements in patients with Multiple Sclerosis after a 12week exercise program. Future studies will include populations with HIV Cerebral Vascular Accident and Parkinson Disease and others.
