Doctor of Physical Therapy Program

 

Mission

The Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy, in concert with the mission of UMDNJ and the School of Health Related Professions, strives to graduate entry-level physical therapists who embody the professional values, behaviors and skills to practice competently, responsibly and collaboratively within autonomous models of service delivery, inclusive of clinical, educational, professional and community venues, and who  have the knowledge and skills to maintain currency in practice. The program supports this mission through its faculty who collectively model professionalism and collaboration as leaders, educators, researchers, clinicians, and volunteers.

Program

The Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) is a full time three-year program that

prepares students to enter the physical therapy profession. This comprehensive 110 credit graduate program prepares students for leadership roles within the profession through its vibrant and supportive educational environment that attracts and nurtures the very best faculty and students. The physical therapy department has a rich tradition of academic excellence in education, research, patient care and community service.

The goals of the UMDNJ DPT program are as follows.

  4. Ensure collaboration within autonomous models
  5. Develop skills to maintain currency in practice

Curriculum

The Entry–Level Doctor of Physical Therapy Curriculum encompasses a three–year program that prepares a student to enter the physical therapy profession as a clinician capable of practicing in an autonomous and ethical manner. Upon graduation the student will have skills in differential diagnosis‚ as well as in advanced clinical and management practices. They will be able to understand and apply research presented in various formats to clinical decision making and practice and will be expected to help lead the profession in the changes needed for effective practice in the 21st century. Our programs have been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education since 1980.
