Web-Based Learning FAQs |
What special equipment and skills do I need to participate in online learning?
You should possess basic computer skills such as Internet browsing and searching, e-mailing and word processing. You must also have remote (off campus) access to Internet services, to include at least Internet browsing capability and e-mail.
|
|
I have never taken an online course before. How does it work?
We use a course management system to deliver our courses online. All first time students are required to complete a 2-3 hour online orientation. The orientation will introduce you to the environment and guide you through some of its most commonly used features.
How are the online courses designed?
A The most important ingredient in an online course is your participation. Our online courses have been designed to provide a high level of interaction between you, your instructors, and fellow classmates. Ongoing interactions between faculty and students is required, and our faculty are readily accessible by e-mail or phone. Courses are offered over a semester and are divided into content units. Activities are scheduled on a weekly basis with readings, assignments, and participation in online discussions with course faculty and students. Weekly due dates for course assignments and activities are provided by the faculty. Your online participation is asynchronous, that is, you do not have to be online at any specific time - you can log into a course during the week at your own convenience. On average, you should expect to dedicate 9 hours per week for each graduate course.
What about library resources? How can I access them at a distance?
The UMDNJ Libraries provide extraordinarily good online access to dozens of research databases and hundreds of full-text journals. These resources are not available to the general public, but are available to you once you register for courses. To get a better feel for the scope of library resources offered, visit the following site:
