Dental Hygiene:
Program
The dental hygiene program consists of five
prerequisite courses and a four-semester professional
sequence offered jointly by the UMDNJ-School
of Health Related Professions, Brookdale
Community College (BCC), Essex
County College (ECC, Raritan
Valley Community College (RVCC),
Thomas
Edison State College (TESC), and Union County
College (UCC)
Forty students are accepted into
the program each January and commence their
studies under the professional leadership of
the faculty of the UMDNJ-SHRP. Faculty of the
UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School also provide
instruction in the program. Dental hygiene students
have access to the most modern equipment and
treatment facilities at the UMDNJ-New Jersey
Dental School as well as at the SHRP-Scotch
Plains Dental Suite.

Students who successfully complete the program
are awarded a joint Associate Degree in Applied
Science by Brookdale Community College, Essex
County College, Raritan Valley Community College,
Thomas Edison State College, or Union County
College, and UMDNJ-School of Health Related
Professions. Graduates are eligible to take
the National and Northeast Regional Board examinations
for dental hygiene licensure.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Allied Dental Education
faculty is the promotion of teamwork between
the two disciplines of Dental Hygiene and Dental
Assisting. In order to advance this cooperative
team philosophy, a core
of allied dental courses has been developed.
UMDNJ is the only program in New Jersey that
provides students the opportunity to transfer
core courses completed in the Dental Assisting
Program into the Dental Hygiene Program within
two years of completion.
Accreditation
The Dental Hygiene Program is approved by the
New Jersey Department of Higher Education and
is accredited by the American Dental Association’s
Commission on Accreditation, the specialized
accrediting agency recognized by the Council
on Post Secondary Accreditation and the U.S.
Department of Education.
