Phone:(973)972-4249 Fax:(973)972-7403 Course of Study: Full Time Option The following courses comprise the curriculum for the Certificate in nurse-midwifery, leading to the national examination. Courses are purely didactic, or didactic/clinical, depending on the subject treated. Foundations of Primary Health Care Develops and reviews the knowledge and skill necessary to perform health assessment of women throughout the life cycle. Antepartal Nurse-Midwifery Management Provides, through seminars, guest lectures and intense supervised clinical experiences, the knowledge and skills necessary for the management and care of essentially healthy pregnant women, emphasizing a holistic approach. Intrapartal/Postpartal Nurse-Midwifery Management Focuses on the management and care of normal, healthy women during the time of labor, delivery and early postpartum, with emphasis on the development of critical thinking, wise clinical judgement and decision making. Skills, such as hand maneuvers and suturing, are practiced both in the laboratory setting and in the clinical area. Special attention is given to the support and education of the postpartum family. Neonatology, Nurse-Midwifery Management Focuses on the management, through the practice of healthy newborn physical exam, of the normal baby. Various patterns of daily activities are recognized so as to provide support and reassurance to the new family unit. Interconceptional Nurse-Midwifery Management Provides the theoretical knowledge and develops clinical skills to manage the care of the healthy woman during the interconceptional period utilizing various birth control methods and includes screening for and treatment of minor gynecological problems. Teaching in the Health Professions An analysis of the role of the health professional teacher in the planning, development, management and evaluation of instruction. Pharmacology Focuses on the science of pharmacology in terms of general concepts and principles governing chemical-biological interactions. It relates these principles to pharmaco-therapeutic management by the nurse-midwife as a facet of the total approach to primary health care. Professional Issues of Nurse-Midwifery Focuses on the historical and current development of the role and responsibilities of the nurse-midwife. Attendance at the Annual ACNM Convention is a course requirement. Integration of Nurse-Midwifery practice A capstone experience enhancing the synthesis of all learning within the curriculum, including refinement of newly acquired skills, and socialization in the nurse-midwifery profession. Part Time Study Option The faculty of the Nurse-Midwifery program is offering a part time study option . This will be available with the intention of attracting those candidates whose personal circumstances would be best suited for this option. The following is a brief explanation of the program. If you think that you would be interested in such an option, be sure to ask our receptionist for more detailed information. The curriculum of the program will remain unchanged. The difference is the time component, increasing from one to two years or more Other options can be tailored as personal individual needs Masters Completion Option The Nurse-Midwifery Education Program is offering a Masters Completion Option as a track within the Masters of Science in Health Sciences to students completing the requirements for the Nurse-Midwifery Certificate Program. The program is a joint degree with Seton Hall University. Nurse-Midwifery Program credits will be transferred through the specialization track. Graduates of the UMDNJ/SHRP Nurse-Midwifery program with a 3.0 GPA will automatically be accepted if entering within five years of application. The Masters requirements may be started with the Nurse-Midwifery Program.
