The Curriculum:

The curriculum is designed to reflect major areas of study important in the preparation of counselors with expertise in working with individuals with disabilities in the community.  These include:

  2. Social and Cultural Diversity
  3. Human Growth and Development
  4. Career Development
  5. Helping Relationships
  6. Group Work
  7. Assessment
  8. Research and Program Evaluation
  9. Community Services and Resources
  10. Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Disability

As part of the curriculum, all students complete a Practicum and an Internship to practice and integrate counseling skills learned in coursework.  With the permission of their agencies and of the Program Director for the M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling, students employed in relevant settings may complete these experiences at their agency job sites.

The curriculum is designed to reflect the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE)


Number of Credits Required:
Completing the M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling requires a total of 51 credits. This can be completed in two years of full time study or three years of part time study. This includes study in the summer as certain courses are offered only in the summer semester.

Requirements for Graduation: M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling

The course of study includes 51 credits in the following areas:

Core counseling courses:  27 credits 

Specialized counseling courses:  12 credits

Counseling practice including practicum and internship:  9 credits

Elective:  3 credits

The elective is selected from graduate level courses in advanced practice.  By advisement, students may take as an elective a graduate course from another department such as Interdisciplinary Studies.  Examples of electives are below:
