Matthew McQuillan - Associate Professor
Mr. McQuillan joined the faculty in January
1998. He received his undergraduate degree (cum laude) in Communication Arts
in 1987 from St. John's University and is a 1996 graduate of the University
of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and Rutgers University Physician
Assistant Program. Currently, he is pursuing a Doctorate in Medical Humanities
(D.M.H.) at Drew University and expects to complete his studies by 2005.
His clinical experience includes a brief
stint in cardiothoracic surgery in New York. Realizing that primary care was
his true calling, he accepted a position at a family practice/urgent care
center in Hunterdon County where he continues to work on a part-time basis.
Prior to becoming a physician assistant, Mr. McQuillan was employed by Continental
Airlines where he worked in the In-flight Department as a Training Specialist,
Flight Attendant Recruiter, and Supervisor of In-flight Services.
Mr. McQuillan's current teaching responsibilities
include Medical Interviewing, Physical Diagnosis, Professionalism, Introduction
to Radiology, Case Based Learning and other clinical lab sessions. One of
his main administrative duties is the development of clinical sites. He also
serves as faculty advisor to the Society of UMDNJ Physician Assistant Students
(SUPAS).
He is a contributing author in several
physician assistant publications and review books including Primary Care
for Physician Assistants and Appleton and Lange's Review for the
Physician Assistant . He also serves as a contributing test item writer
for the Association of Physician Assistant Programs (APAP) GRADRAT (Graduate
Review Assessment Tool) Committee which produces an annual exam for physician
assistants preparing for re-certification. In 2002, Mr. McQuillan was awarded
the Excellence in Teaching Award for the UMDNJ School of Health Related Professions.
Mr. McQuillan is active on several committees
within the University and is also an active board member of the New Jersey
State Society of Physician Assistants (NJSSPA). In 2003, NJSSPA recognized
him as "PA of the Year."
