Ms. Fixelle joined the faculty in 1978
as the Clinical Coordinator after graduating from the second class of the
University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and Rutgers University
(RU) Physician Assistant Program. In 1981 she was promoted from Clinical Coordinator
to Director. Her clinical experience includes eight years as a PA in emergency
medicine at a hospital in New York. In 1999, Ms. Fixelle decided to "semi-retire"
and now serves as the Program Director on a part-time basis.
Ms. Fixelle served on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey State Society
of Physician Assistants (NJSSPA) from 1978 to 1992 when legislation permitting
PA practice in New Jersey was finally passed. At that time she became a member
of the Physician Assistant Advisory Committee to the New Jersey State Board
of Medical Examiners (NJSBME) and served in that capacity for seven years.
In that same year, Ms. Fixelle received the American Academy of Physician
Assistant's (AAPA) Presidential Award for her work in obtaining legal status
for PAs in New Jersey.
Other honors include the UMDNJ's Excellence
in Education Award and the UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions' (SHRP)
Excellence in Teaching Award. Ms. Fixelle has served as an evaluator of PA
Programs for the Accreditation Review Committee (ARC) and as a consultant
for the New York Health and Hospitals Corporation (NYHHC), the New York State
Regents, Howard University PA Program, and as a medical consultant for a legal
firm in malpractice cases.
