Health Science Careers: Pre-College
Program
The UMDNJ Pre College Program's primary goal is to assist each student in building a solid academic foundation that will serve as the pathway to a successful professional career and the UMDNJ Pre-College Program administration has an interest in developing students who are interested in becoming health care practitioners. In this University setting, students are exposed to resources that assist in preparing students for a career in health care. The Pre-College Program at UMDNJ-SHRP is part of the Consortium for Pre-College Education in Greater Newark. The Consortium for Pre College Education in Greater Newark is an agreement between the universities in Newark and the Public Schools in Newark, Irvington, and the East Orange School Districts, to work together to provide programs and activities to students. The Consortium hopes to expose students to a college experience at an early age and prepare them to enter the college of their choice. The Newark Campuses in the Universities below provide programs as a part of the Consortium for Pre College Education: *University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) *Rutgers University- Newark College of Arts & Sciences (RCNAS) *New Jersey Institute of Technology-(NJIT)  The UMDNJ Pre-College program is year round program with two major components. The Pre-College Academic Year Component(September through May) During the school year, students attend classes on Saturday for twenty weeks. The Pre-College Summer Component (July through August) Students attend classes Monday through Thursday. Students participate in a field trip every friday during this five week summer program component.  Each young person applying to the Pre-College Program must complete an application, a short essay, provide a school transcript, and submit a letter of recommendation from his or her guidance counselor. The applicant must also: reside in Newark, East Orange, or Irvington be enrolled in the Newark, East Orange, Irvington Public School System be enrolled in any of the following grades (7th through 12th) and exhibit the potential and desire to succeed. Newark, East Orange, and Irvington residents attending private school will be considered. There are no tuition fees or costs associated with participation in this program. |
