Associate of Science (AS) in Respiratory Care
Overview
The North Jersey Respiratory Care AS
degree option is a joint venture with six community colleges;
Essex,
Hudson,
Middlesex,
Raritan Valley, Union and
Warren. The general education and science
requirements for this option are completed at the enrolling college.
The respiratory courses are offered in Newark at UMDNJ-SHRP.
Graduates receive a joint AS degree in Respiratory
Care from UMDNJ-SHRP and the enrolling community college.
Accreditation & Credentialing
The UMDNJ-SHRP (Newark) Respiratory
Care Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health
Programs (CAAHEP), in collaboration with the Committee on Accreditation for
Respiratory Care (CoARC). Graduates are eligible for both the entry-level
licensure/ CRT examination (required by the State of New Jersey) and the
advanced practice RRT examinations, both offered by the National Board for
Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Admission Requirements
Applicants to the North Jersey
Respiratory Care Program must hold a high school diploma or GED certificate and
meet all admission requirements of the participating community college to which
they apply. In addition, applicants must have completed high school courses in
algebra, biology, and chemistry. Because enrollment in the program is limited,
admission to the professional course sequence at UMDNJ-SHRP is competitive. To be eligible
for the professional course sequence, a student must complete at least 34
credits of general education and science course work while maintaining a C+ or
better average (GPA of at least a 2.75). Candidates are selected by each
participating college from those meeting these minimum standards. In addition,
matriculants must complete certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers before starting their respiratory care courses.
Students can pursue the curriculum on either a full or part-time basis. Students should choose the full-time curriculum only if they have or can arrange to have little or NO significant work or personal responsibilities. Students should choose the part-time track if they have any significant work or family commitments or have never experienced a full-time (12-credits+) science/lab oriented curriculum.
Candidates must be able to meet the Essential Technical and Professional Standards as described in the Respiratory Care Program-North Policies and Procedures manual.
