Joint BS in Allied Health
Technologies (BSAHT) and Second BS
Entry-level Options in Respiratory Care*
An entry-level joint BS in Allied Health
Technologies is sponsored by UMDNJ in collaboration with Bloomfield
College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Felician College, Georgian Court
College, New Jersey City University, Ramapo College of New Jersey, and Rutgers
University - Newark. A second BS option in Allied Health Technologies is also available for candidates that have previously completed a BS degree from a regionally accredited US College or University. Degrees from foreign educational institutions will be considered if accompanied by a World Education Services (WES) evaluation statement and core curricular requirements have been met.
*Note: Neither of the above bachelors' degree options is intended for those who have already obtained an Associate of Science degree in respiratory care at an accredited US college/university.
Overview
The joint BSAHT degree option offers a unique combination of a liberal arts education and entry into a postgraduate health career. Graduates of the Program receive a joint BSAHT degree in Respiratory Care from UMDNJ-SHRP and the collaborating institution. Graduates from the joint BSAHT and the second BS options are also eligible for both the entry-level licensure (CRT) and Advanced Practitioner (RRT) examinations offered by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
The joint BSAHT option employs a 3+1 curriculum
model. During the first three years, students complete six semesters and a
minimum of 90-102 credits of undergraduate courses, to include 36-44 credits of
general education and math courses and 25-27 credits in science courses as required by the
collaborating institution.
The Respiratory Care specialty track
is taken in the fourth year of the Program at the Newark campus of UMDNJ-SHRP.
This professional component, 15 months in duration, builds upon the student's
knowledge in basic sciences to provide specific education in respiratory care
and to develop sensitivity toward health care related issues. Classroom
instruction, integrated with clinical practice at affiliate hospital sites
prepares students for a career in in the field of respiratory care upon graduation. Graduates
receive a Joint BS Degree from UMDNJ and their participating college or
university.
Accreditation & Credentialing
The UMDNJ-SHRP (Newark) Respiratory
Care Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health
Programs (CAAHEP), in collaboration with the Committee on Accreditation for
Respiratory Care (CoARC). Graduates are eligible for both the entry-level
licensure/ CRT examination (required by the State of New Jersey) and the
advanced practice RRT examinations, both offered by the National Board for
Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Admission Requirements
Applicants to both BS options must hold a high school diploma or GED certificate and
meet all admission requirements of the collaborating institution. Because
enrollment in the program is limited, admission to the professional course
sequence at UMDNJ-SHRP is competitive. To be eligible for the respiratory course sequence, a
student must complete most of the general education requirements and science
course work at the collaborating institution while maintaining a C+ or better
average (GPA of at least a 2.75).
Candidates must be able to meet the Essential Technical and Professional Standards as described in the Respiratory Care Program-North Policies and Procedures manual.
Course of Study**
The BSAHT curriculum consists of all
general education and science courses as required by the collaborating
institution and approximately 39-42 credits of professional courses taken at
UMDNJ-SHRP. Students can pursue the curriculum on either a full or part-time basis. Students should choose the full-time curriculum only if they have or can arrange to have little or NO significant work or personal responsibilities. Students should choose the part-time track if they have any significant work or family commitments or have never experienced a full-time (12-credits+) science/lab oriented curriculum.
