Introduction

"What do I want to do when I graduate?" is a question most high school students face at one time or the other. And for some, the UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions'(SHRP) Health Science Careers program helps answer that question.

The Health Science Careers program enables juniors and seniors to earn up to 22 college credits in preparation for a career in a health field. It is a program that occurs between high schools and UMDNJ-SHRP and it is part of the regular high school day at each individual high school.

The program held its thirteenth and largest annual Student Recognition Ceremony on June 7, 2007 at the SHRP campus in Scotch Plains. David Gibson, Ed.D., Dean, welcomed 905 students from 43 high schools throughout New Jersey. All 905 students were awarded a Certificate for Participation in the Health Science Careers program. Two students from each high school who achieved academic excellence were also awarded Certificates for Academic Excellence. David Gibson Ed.D., Dean and Julie O'Sullivan Maillet, Ph.D.,RD, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Research at SHRP both attended and spoke addressing a wide range of topics, including the demand for professionals in more than 200 health care fields.

Edward Kelley, MEd, assistant Dean of SHRP's Off-Campus Programs, worked with Health Science Careers program director Suzanne D'Anna to create this special day. For more information, call (908)889-2434.

We also awarded the Pat Olson Memorial Scholarship to two Health Science Careers students at the UMDNJ-SHRP Annual Recognition Ceremony which was held on May 22, 2007 at the Pines Manor. Pat was one of the founding members of the Health Science Careers program when it began in 1992.

Health Science Careers College Fair 2007

On October 26, 2007 UMDNJ-SHRP hosted our 9th Annual Health Science Careers College fair at the New Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ. We showcased many of New Jersey's colleges and universities who have health related programs as well as all of our SHRP programs. Over 525 students attended, and were able to visit the museum as well. As always the event was well received and lots of fun.

Students had the opportunity to perform ultrasound examinations on graduate students, (below)
