Grants.gov

Grants.gov is a single unified storefront for all customers of federal funds to electronically search for funding opportunities and apply for support for their research-related activities.

In an effort to provide the faculty and staff of SHRP with information pertaining to the recent grants.gov federal mandate for electronic submission of grant applications, the following tips are provided to enable successful submission of funding applications:

1. Necessary Software:

As a first step in the electronic submission process applicants for federal funds should download PureEdge ICS Viewer to their computer's desktop. This is done by going to the following website: http://www.grants.gov/DownloadViewer.

Note: Adobe Acrobat is necessary for converting documents to PDF for upload into application package. For an Adobe License contact your Department Administrator or IST Department.

2. Contact your Grant Administrator:

As soon as investigators know they will be submitting an application, they should contact the Office of Research. Applicants should provide the application name, type of funding opportunity and URL to program announcement. NOTE: Principal Investigator's(PIs) DO NOT submit the application directly to Grants.gov. Applications are to be routed to the SHRP Office of Research for review and submission to Grants.gov.

3. Time Line:

When submitting via Grants.gov, principal investigators should submit their "completed" application to the SHRP Office of Research at least 3 days prior to the agency's submission deadline for the funding opportunity in which they are interested! The SHRP Office of Research also requires a ten day preview of the administrative sections of the application for review and comments.

4. Grants.gov Registration:

Principal Investigator's (PIs) DO NOT register for Grants.gov. Registration is intended for designated individuals in the SHRP Office of Research who submit applications via Grants.gov. The institution is already registered in the Central Contractor Registry (CCR).

5. NIH Applications:

PI's should have an eRA Commons Profile and User ID. If you do not know your eRA Commons User ID, please contact the Office of Research. Please make sure the profile is updated so that it is an exact match to what is on the application (title, degrees etc.).

TIPS for working with Grants.gov:

  • Use Internet Explorer.
  • You need to enable cookie support and pop-ups.
  • When naming files, don’t use space, hyphens, special characters in the file names.
  • Be sure to read both the agency solicitation AND the Grants.gov instructions. We have seen numerous mismatches between the two.
  • PureEdge is only a file, not a website. You need to save the file to your hard drive BEFORE you begin entering info into the file. You may also wish to save the file to a shared drive.
  • Complete the 424 or 424 R&R first. It populates other forms.
  • The file doesn’t automatically save. You have to click on SAVE to save the data entered.
  • Notify the Office of Research as soon as you know this is going through Grants.gov.
