Associate of Science Degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation
Psychiatric rehabilitation professionals
provide community services to people with severe mental illnesses
and other disabilities, empowering them to manage their illnesses
and live rewarding and productive lives in the community.
To meet the demand for qualified professionals in this area,
UMDNJ’s School of Health Related Professions (SHRP)
now offers a full psychiatric rehabilitation career ladder-from
the associate’s through the Ph.D. degree. This program
will provide you with the basic skills and rehabilitation
techniques to begin your career. As part of the program, you
will complete two semesters of fieldwork at a community service
agency.
Psychosocial Rehabilitation Associates of Science Program
Psychosocial Rehabilitation professionals provide community-based
supports and services to people diagnosed with severe mental
illnesses. There are career opportunities in a variety of
psychiatric and community mental health settings, such as
residential, partial care and supported employment programs.
You will need to earn a total of 61 to 63 credits to graduate.
The 31-33 credits of general education courses are provided
by a community college affiliate or may be transferred from
other schools. The 30 credits of psychosocial rehabilitation
courses are provided by UMDNJ-SHRP. You will take all general
education classes at the affiliate. Psychosocial rehabilitation
courses are offered at SHRP’s Scotch Plains campus and Stratford campus. (Note:
Some of the affiliates offer PSRT1101 and other first year
PSRT courses on their campus; some PSRT courses are offered
via the Internet).You can take course work on either a full-time
or part-time basis.

At Union County College and Warren County Community College,
the 31-32 credits in general education include:
6 Credits in English Composition
3 or 4 Credits in Mathematics
6 Credits in Psychology
4 Credits in Biology
3 Credits of Computer Science
3 Credits of Sociology
3 Credits in Philosophy
3 Credits in Communications or Public Speaking
At Cumberland County College the 31 credits in general education include:
6 Credits in English Composition
3 Credits in General Psychology
3 Credits in Computer Science
3 Credits in College Algebra
3 Credits in Human Growth and Development
3 Credits in Healthcare
4 Credits in Biology
3 Credits in Health and Fitness
3 Credits in Sociology
Students from all affiliates are required to take the following
30 credits in Psychosocial Rehabilitation:
Introduction to Principles of Psychosocial Rehabilitation
(3 credits)
Communication Techniques (3 credits)
Introduction to Group Dynamics (3 credits)
Clinical Principles in Psychosocial Rehabilitation (3 credits)
Community Resource Management (3 credits)
Clinical Practicum in Psychosocial Rehabilitation I (6 credits)
Clinical Practicum in Psychosocial Rehabilitation II (6 credits)
Emerging Topics in Psychosocial Rehabilitation (3 credits)
Successful completion of all the requirements will earn you
a joint Associate of Science Degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation
from SHRP and your affiliate.

by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States

Where do I apply?
Start by applying to one of the program affiliates: Middlesex
County College, Union County College or Warren County Community
College. Initially, you will register, pay tuition and apply
for financial aid at the affiliate. Once you have completed
21 credits of the general education requirements (see required
coursework), you will qualify for admission to the professional
phase of the program and will be admitted to UMDNJ-SHRP, where
you will also register, pay tuition and receive financial
aid if qualified.
